Himachal: Cyber crimes rise exponentially

Shimla, Jan 10 (UNI) Cyber Crimes witnessed an exponential rise in Himachal Pradesh as a large number of cases are being registered every day.

This information was given by Additional Superintendent of Police (Cyber ​​Crime) Narveer Singh Rathore in the weekly webinar of Umang Foundation on Human Rights Awareness on Monday.
He said that investigation found that more men are victim of Cyber fraud compared to women.
In the year 2021, more than 8500 complaints of cyber crimes were registered with Himachal Police, out of these, 77 per cent complaints were from men.
Internet and cyber security is now a fundamental right of all citizens.
Narveer Singh Rathore said that more than 72 crore people use the internet in the country.
Out off these, 67 per cent are males and 33 per cent are females. 62 per cent of internet users are connected to social media.

He said that the Supreme Court and other courts have made it clear that Internet access and cyber security is a fundamental right of any individual or institution.
He also listed several measures that could be adopted to protect against hacking and other cyber crimes.
He said that awareness is the biggest measure to counter the cyber crime as highly educated persons such as doctors, engineers, professors and senior officers are also among the victims of cyber fraud due to ignorance towards cyber security issues.

Rathore noted that 95 per cent of the cyber criminals targeting Himachalis are located in other states or foreign countries.
Criminals not only create a photo of any person but also create a fake voice through artificial intelligence.
He said that information regarding crimes committed through internet can be given immediately on toll free number 155260 or on WhatsApp number 9805953670 of Himachal Police.
Cyber ​​crimes include money laundering, hacking websites and social media accounts and demanding ransom, sending or viewing nude or semi-nude photographs and videos of women and children, sending obscene messages, collecting and sending material related to national security, counterfeit train tickets or making electricity bills and other similar offences. All these are punishable offences.

Rathore said that in order to commit cyber crimes, the vicious ones gain control over a person’s data by sending many types of viruses and malwares.
He cautioned that one should be careful in using the free WiFi facility available in many places and avoid clicking on any suspicious posts or links, under no circumstances should one share any information related to his bank account or financial transactions with unknown people over phone or internet.
Doing so may empty one’s bank account. He said that 90 per cent of the people who have been cheated are themselves partly to blame.
Additional Superintendent of Police said that recently the Union Home Ministry has directed all the states to conduct cyber security awareness campaigns on a large scale, involve all sections of society, especially youth and children.
The convener of the program, Sanjeev Sharma, President of Umang Foundation, Prof. Ajay Srivastava said that school children studying on mobile should be given information about cyber security so that vicious criminals do not exploit them.
