IMF stands ready to engage with new Lebanese government

Washington, Sep 16 (UNI/Sputnik) The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is ready to engage with the new government of Lebanon in order to support the nation’s economy, IMF spokesperson Gerry Rice told reporters on Thursday.
“We have had some courtesy calls with members or the new government in Lebanon. We stand ready to engage with the new government in the period ahead,” Rice said in a press briefing without providing additional details on specific timelines.
Speaking on measures of support that the IMF providing to Lebanon and other countries, he reminded that the fund announced the historic $650 billion Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) allocation in late August to all member countries.
“It is for the government to decide how their SDRs should be used, but it is important that it be used to help replenish depleted Central Bank reserves,” Rice said.
The new government of Lebanon, led by Prime Minister Najib Mikati, was formed late last week.
